I never expected this book to be a dry academic historically factual tome - its fiction, he can do what he likes, surely. I certainly think he did a powerful job of depicting the horrors of slave life and the dangers that sympathisers faced in helping runaways. The realised metaphor of the railroad can hardly even be called "magical". Just an alternative universe. (less)
