Does anyone like that the author wrote the railroad as a physical, operating one? I felt it unnecessary and beyond the scope of possibility.

"Underground railroad" is already a metaphor for the network of routes and stops for escaping slaves. It's a metaphor because it was not literally a railroad and it was not literally underground. So turning that metaphor into a literal railroad, literally underground, makes it NOT a metaphor.(less)
