Does anyone like that the author wrote the railroad as a physical, operating one? I felt it unnecessary and beyond the scope of possibility.

The (real) railroad is an integral part of the expansion of settlers across the US and trains are often seen as a metaphor for personal freedom. The train also signalled (geddit?) the transition between different stages in Cora's journey. I also liked the way each station (in different states) had its own personality. (less)
