I do not think that it added anything to the story to write about the railroad as if it was a physical entity and in fact, I think it took away from the novel. When I have read about the history of the underground railroad, the risks and realities of transporting a slave to freedom were enormous, and much of that was lost once the characters arrived at a "station" and could board a train. Why not do full justice to the perils that both slaves and abolitionists faced? And why not stick to the history, if the author wanted to write a historical novel? It was such a preposterous idea that it left me feeling like the author had not done his research.(less)
