I didn't read a lot of writing books (I think I've read one--Stephen King's On Writing) and I didn't take a lot of writing classes. The one thing that really helped me to figure it out was writing more books, perfecting the craft, going back and applying lessons learned to earlier books, etc. There is really no substitute for hands on the keys, butt in the seat and just DOING IT. Over and over and over again until you get it right. And read a lot in the genre you are targeting. That also helps as long as you make sure your books are uniquely your own. Good luck!
