I did understand the history of one of the characters better by reading Black Cross first. However, these are not my favorite of his books. I loved the Natchez Burning series ... that was awesome and kept me on the edge of my seat. It includes Natchez Burning, The Devils Punchbowl, The Bone Tree and Mississippi Blood. Excellent series! But you must read them in order.
