Grace asked:

Why can't either Shemal or Lesto bear children? I remember Nyle bearing children as well as a side character in this story? Just curious

Tenny Well, Nyle and Lord Tara are trans men (confirmed by author on her tumblr), so they are biologically "equipped", so to speak, to bear children. Shemal and Lesto are not, so they have to adopt.
Nix Buttons [I wonder how so many overlook this, it's clearly explained in book 1] It is made clear that there is no medical or magical transitioning, no male pregnancies or other such things. However, in the Harken Empire one can choose their own gender identity (be it male, female or fluid), in most parts there is no sexism and no one is pressured into a heterosexual relationship, there are also cultures and regions where polyamory is practised.
Shemal and Lesto are biological male and can't produce offspring without a dame (a surrogate woman carrying children for them, though the impregnation has to happen the old-fashioned way). Nyle was transgender and biological female, so he was able to bear children.
Gwendolyn I was wondering the same thing.
