A Goodreads user asked this question about Crime and Punishment:
I just started this and I'm a little confused. Raskolnikov goes one monologues a lot, and I always get lost. Who is Sonia, what's the name of the man Dunya is gonna marry? And also, what's Raskolnikov's problem with Dunya's finance? Why is he so mad she's gonna marry him?
Jelena I recommend you read the book slowly and carefully because most of what you've asked in your comment above can be found if you concentrate well enough…moreI recommend you read the book slowly and carefully because most of what you've asked in your comment above can be found if you concentrate well enough (and also, if you finish the book!). You should also remember that every character has a name, a patronym and a last name, so sometimes you'll see a character being referred to as, for example, Pyotr Petrovich, and sometimes as Luzhin. Just don't give up because this classic doesn't bear the title for nothing - it's a beautiful book worth reading.(less)

Ramona I have found that making a list of these foreign names with a brief reference to the character helps.

Jelena It is helpful, yes. Most of the people I know and who have read the book have done the same.

Ramona I should have done that when reading The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo.....all of the Swedish names were impossible to remember.
