Is anything in "Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend" based on your real life experiences, or is it all just your imagination?
Katarina Bivald
I wrote to entertain myself, so naturally I didn't base it on my own life. I had to spend enough time in reality as it was, without visiting it again when I wrote on evenings and weekends. I chose a country I had never visited and a state I knew absolutely nothing about (the only things I knew about Iowa was that it had lots of corn and that it had once had a library cat named Dewey Readmore Books).
Sara especially wasn't based on me. Come on! She has no social skills, no life, no friends. And I have friends.
It's only, when I told all my friends and family that Sara wasn't based on me, they sort of looked away, and then they said "no, no" much too quickly while refusing to look me in the eyes.
So somehow or another, I think a lot of myself slipped into Sara and all of the people in Broken Wheel.

I'm so glad that Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend was translated into English. And thank you for the list of books referenced at the end of your story! I love how Sarah named the bookshelves and rearranged the books accordingly. Where did this idea come from? Have you done this with your own collection? I'm inspired.
