Bonnye Reed
Bonnye Reed asked Susan Wittig Albert:

Are you familiar with the small towns in Wharton Cty? When we moved there in 1981 many grandmothers still spoke only Germanic languages, and the little phone book had more names that started with Z than with S or C. The local tale was of a couple of ships of politically active families emigrating to New Orleans, swept off their travel plan by a bad storm. They walked inland to black dirt and settled.

Susan Wittig Albert I didn't know that, Bonnye. I did know that, during WW2, German POWs were used to work in the rice fields around Warton and other Coastal Bend communities. http://www.thevindicator.com/news/art... Maybe some stayed--that happened in other communities.
