I think they were just two very strong women that bonded by their situation of trying to not only serve their country in an area that was, for the most part, a man's possition, but also trying to survive the war and all the dangers itself. I think if it was written with two male characters you wouldn't feel that way. The physical and emotional stuff you go through in war can intimately bond people who have gone through it together... I would think especially women who were in the minority.(less)
