The title does suggest a quite literal meaning and the book deals with the history of the bird in a thoroughgoing way extending over 10,000 years of Time, unlike Mary Roach who is a real person and writes spooky fiction stuff, weird science and studies having a flavour of social anthropology, all quite eclectic. We should see Tastes Like Chicken as a serious attempt at a very grand documentary work on a favourite food of Americans, I think. I hope this helps!

It's meant to be a bit of both. There is definitely some serious history explaining how the chicken became America's favorite meat but also some unusual and (hopefully!) funny chicken stories in there as well.
