That's only a minor element in a character-driven literary work that provides some backstory for some of the characters' behavior. This is a family saga with heavily religious themes that takes place primarily over the course of one long prayer service/altar call in an African-American church in Harlem. A great deal of the backstory is provided as thoughtful flashback while the characters are in prayer. (less)
