Atheena asked this question about Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis:
This is a hard read. I am 53 years old and just finished this book yesterday. I have cried all day yesterday, all night woke with nightmares and am crying now. I know this is for questions. The only question I have is... does it ever get ok?

I've listened to the audiobook and have spent my car rides to and from work in tears. The best thing that I can say is that you can reflect on the areas of your life that are lacking and consciously find ways to make it better and to overcome it. It is not easy and I still make transgressions, but you can slowly escape the lifestyle and hope and pray that your behavior can then be reflected in your family members. Sometimes you have to let go of some family members and take the time to heal yourself before you can slowly let them back into your life. Sometimes friends will push you away and choose to continue the cycle. Just continue to reflect and pray and work for change. (less)
