If your child has already read other dark novels, probably ok. They would get more out of it if they've already read other dark novels otherwise it could just 'glorify' darkness.

Here's a list of 'preppers' for this book. Try out some of them, the more the better. Dracula, Frankenstein, Divine Comedy, Crime and Punishment, Hunger (by Knut), Handmaid's Tale, I Am Legend, Train to Pakistan, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Roots, The Metamorphosis, Go Ask Alice and Lolita (Lolita for kids could be a very dangerous combination, but if they've already been abused it could help with recovery or if they are at risk of abuse maybe it could help with prevention. I'm not sure on this one. I read it as an adult and it still chills me to the core more than anything else I've ever read.)

And probably Faust which I haven't read yet. Doctor Faustus, etc. (less)
