Rhonda
Rhonda asked Brenda Novak:

How often do you surprise yourself with the direction a story takes?

Brenda Novak Hi Rhonda! Thanks for the question. This happens to me all the time. I'm not a plotter. I'm what other writers would call a "pantser." I fly by the seat of my pants when I write, letting the plot grow from the characters. This means I usually don't know the bad guy while I'm writing a story (if the story has a bad guy). I figure it out in the end and then go back to make sure I've been fair with the reader in my red herrings and hints. I like being surprised!
