Not necessarily. The first 3 books is a trilogy, and give you a great overview of the world of Xanth and how things work in it and many of the prime players.
I would recommend at least reading the first 3 in order.
1) A Spell for Chameleon
2) The Source of Magic
3) Castle Roogna
From here, you can jump to any book, pretty much, but these also have a 3 book story arc:
4) Centaur Aisle
5) Ogre, Ogre
6) Night Mare
7) Dragon on a Pedestal
8) Crewel Lye
9) Golem in the Gears

I think in order makes the most sense for this series. Even though they almost could be standalone but they reference earlier works multiple times...

The preference is to read them in order, since the later books either refer to people or places from previous books in the series. jumping from say 3 to 7 to 4 then to 9 could quite confuse you as you will not get the references. Technically they books could be stand alone content, a little look into the window of Xanth. As a reader of the series up to date as of this writing, i would suggest to follow the order of the books. Use the interwebs to find the full list of Xanth books (in order) and have fun immersing yourself.
