What I think, though, is that he serves at …moreHonestly, the book is what you make of it. There's no concrete answer for why Volkheimer is the way he is. What I think, though, is that he serves at first as a ruthless soldier but there are moments that show when he also has some heart to him, such as when he's reflecting on where he grew up. He's not quite as compassionate as Werner and is guilty of many horrific actions, but he redeems himself somewhat in the end, when he returns Werner's bag to Jutta years later. (less)
