Goodreads asked Rachel Caine:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Rachel Caine There is absolutely no substitute for putting in the work. Telling stories makes you better at telling stories. Read as widely as you can, read constantly, read for the joy of it, and let that joy inform what you do.

At the same time, find out about the BUSINESS of writing. Know the basics of how contracts work, why you should/shouldn't self-publish or traditionally publish, how agents work, and all the rights you create when you create a work (and what to do with them). That's all very important too.

But mostly write. There's no substitute.
