Hi Maria, I have read some of your books and enjoy them greatly but I was wondering what inspired you to write? And why you chose magic as a main subject? I love your characters but how did you come up with some of the creative names? They are all so interesting. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions :)

Hi Jayde! I'm happy to hear you've enjoyed my books. I was inspired by boredom - really! The amount of work at my job came in waves and it was during the lulls that I started thinking about writing down the stories that had been swirling around in my head for years. I started with science fiction short stories because of my background as a scientist, but I also love reading fantasy, so that seem a natural genre to pick for my first novel.
Naming characters is so much fun and I use a number of baby books to find names that have interesting meanings - Like Yelena means "bright one" and that seemed to fit her personality. I wrote an article about naming characters that you can read here: http://www.mariavsnyder.com/advice/na...

I just finished reading Night Study (it took me less than a day, same for the other study series books) and I just can't wait for Dawn Study to come out!
I was wondering... if Valek's mother is 60 in Night Study and Valek left 28 years before that, when he was 13 and his oldest brothers (who had died) were 17 ... Valek's mother would have given birth at age 15... isn't it a bit too early?

First of all I love all your books the Glass series mainly but I am very hesitant about your latest series Shadows Study. Is it about Yelena in her earlier years or is it about later after she is with Valek but before Opal? I guess I'm just a bit confused. Are you going to start a new series after Opal like say about Rea and Tea? What about a new line of characters?
