Jayde asked Maria V. Snyder:

Hi Maria, I have read some of your books and enjoy them greatly but I was wondering what inspired you to write? And why you chose magic as a main subject? I love your characters but how did you come up with some of the creative names? They are all so interesting. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions :)

Maria V. Snyder Hi Jayde! I'm happy to hear you've enjoyed my books. I was inspired by boredom - really! The amount of work at my job came in waves and it was during the lulls that I started thinking about writing down the stories that had been swirling around in my head for years. I started with science fiction short stories because of my background as a scientist, but I also love reading fantasy, so that seem a natural genre to pick for my first novel.

Naming characters is so much fun and I use a number of baby books to find names that have interesting meanings - Like Yelena means "bright one" and that seemed to fit her personality. I wrote an article about naming characters that you can read here: http://www.mariavsnyder.com/advice/na...
