A Goodreads user asked Claire Legrand:

Hello Ms. Legrand, I recently read your books - The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls and Some Kind of Happiness - and I have a question about the former. At the very end of the novel, when Victoria is on the train, we're told that three people are on the estate again. Is that a flashback sequence that portrays how the home came to be or is that a reference to this whole thing being an inescapable, vicious cycle?

Claire Legrand Hi Lara!

Thank you for your message. This is a great question, and the answer is that, yes, Mrs. Cavendish is an, in your words, "inescapable and vicious" creature who can never truly be destroyed. She can be temporarily defeated, but she will always return. Luckily, brave and resourceful kids like Victoria will, likewise, always be around to fight her. :)

Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed the book!
