This is what kept me going to finish the book -- I kept expecting that date discrepancy to mean something. Now I think it was just poor editing.
Patty
Clearly it was a typo since it's corrected in the audiobook but good pickup from the readers who noticed.
Barbara Schultz
It is corrected on the audio to August 23.

Yes, we discussed this fact at our book club. Our thinking it is going to lead to book #2! We hope the story continues....

I didn't see this question and possible answers before I posted the same question, sorry, My bad.
I am guessing that Gil may have been injured and died after three days in the water and that his body was not found. Otherwise, it was a bad editorial typo and a bad thing to miss.

It was amended in the paperback edition that I have.
Beth Kostecki
Just one of many sloppy editing errors.
Susan
Yes. I'm not done yet, but hope it's an indication that Gil survived for a few days, not that it's a mistake!
Elizabeth Stolar
I am curious as well. The most likely explanation I can think of is an editing error. Because there is nothing whatsoever in the book that intimates Gil survived the crash or any real inkling of what happened to him. The fact that it is not at all addressed makes me think it was simply an error.

I was wondering the same thing, how did Scott notice one person and not the other. I do not think that in a mystery anything is an error, but I wonder what the author would say about this.

There were other typos in the book as well.
Launa
I suspect that it was an editing error. I read a pre-published copy of this book and the date of the crash was August 26.

I noticed this as soon as I started the chapter and thought Oh man maybe he really is involved somehow and once I got to the end of the book realized it was just an editing error

I thought that maybe it was supposed to add to his mystic. It was talked about how all the rumors that surrounded his life and this was just one that followed him into death.

I noticed and thought it was intentional, in keeping with the notion that his body was not found on the plane, perhaps the author had him also survive the crash and swim around aimlessly for three days before perishing, I was expecting to come across such an account before the end of the book, maybe Hawley decided not to write it, or it was taken out in editing?
