Just finished, and am confused by what Eamonn Hughes meant about the car accident, when he told Don that, "Phil's been a bit of a screwup with Rosie" and telling him that Phil pulled Rosie out of the car first. ??? What was this all suppose to mean? Was this suppose to make Don think to test Phil?

We answered this at our bookclub meeting, so I am happy to give you our answer. Don speaks of fathers and offspring and that they have an genetic / natural drive to protect their blood relations. So when Hughes mentions that Phil went to save Rosie first rather than himself (he had a broken shoulder or something like that), and left the wife. So Don made the analytic discovery that this meant he was her father and was acting instinctively.
