Most of the book takes place at a bee farm. The bees were at the bee farm, because bee farms farm bees.
But anyway, this book was not literally about bees. This book centered around Lily, Rosaleen, and the beekeeping sisters. Because bees are a part of daily life, they are oft mentioned and their habits can relate to what is happening is these women's lives.

page 148:"... Bees have a secret life we don't know anything about."
I loved the idea of bees having a secret life, just like the one I was living.
First sentence: At night I would lie in bed and watch the show, how bees squeezed through the cracks of my bedroom wall and flew circles around the room...
Every chapter has a header talking about bees.

The bees are one of the most important parts of the story. At the start of each chapter, the author carefully chooses a quote about bees that represent the core of the story, whether the strength of the queen (females/mom) or the relationship between bees (maternal connections). The symbolism is very beautiful.

There weren't any. Not a single one! Nice catch

You mean, the bees where Lily told us about on Chapter 1? And it goes on throughout the book? What book did you read then?
Sinead

Secret life of Bees is filled with symbolism about bee colonies. At the beginning of each chapter is a thought provoking quote regarding bees. This book is filled with bees and honey and love and loss. Perhaps you should re-read it, since you surely missed the richness of the symbolism of the Queen bee and her importance in each hive...she was their mother bee, in other words, and the main character's involvement in her mother's death is woven throughout the book.
Judy Lindow
Haha. Very funny.
