This answer contains spoilers… (view spoiler)[There was no explanation, there was no physical barrier evidenced by the fact that the people managed to walk straight through it, but nothign to explain what contained the bots to that area. There was a lot to like about this series but this was one of the things that did not make sense to me. I understand that Howey used this as a plot mechanism to be able the end the series how he did with a fresh clean slate, but if the silos were poisoning the world at the cadence of their cleanings, these bots would need to be able to escape their immediate vicinity to do that. They mentioned having the bots 'carried by the wind around the globe', but these bots apparently were immune to the wind somehow, perhaps they were mobile and programmed to stay within a radius of a given gps coordinate, or perhaps as another commenter mentioned, they had a very short half-life (but this doesn't explain a continuous cloud of destruction unless cleanings were much more frequent).

The only explanation I can see to have them stay in the immediate vicinity is to keep the silos in operation for a specified amount of time, perhaps to accomplish some sort of eugenics aligned goal (using the rigged lotteries to breed a preferred 'race' of sorts).

The other explanation that came to mind is that this was always the way it always was, they didn't really have the technology to poison the world so they only poisoned themselves in an effort to keep others from getting to the silos or the silos from getting out. The rest of the world was unaffected and the human race did what everyone said was inevitable and destroyed itself at some point in the next ~300 years.

Sadly, I wish that the contained cloud was not the way he had done it, it does not really make sense physically to keep the poisons contained the way he described. I wish that he had ended it with the characters figuring out how to shut off the gases to stop any *more of the bad bots from escaping, and figure out how to get themselves the good bots gasses, then and after a small period of time, they could have ventured out into the new world to start anew.
