A Goodreads user asked Elizabeth J. Church:

Midway through, there's a beautiful mating passage concerning crows. But out of all the many bird families you could have had Meridian observe and journal - why did you ultimately pick crows?

Elizabeth J. Church Thank you for the description of a passage as "beautiful"!

I felt crows were the birds that best suited Meridian's intelligence and her love of intelligence. They best mirror Alden, who as she eventually realizes is a bird not of splendid feathers or fancy song, but a clever bird. The birds' intricate social lives best mirror humans' social bonds. And, as may be obvious, I really, REALLY like and admire crows -- I wanted to know more about them and then to share that knowledge.
