Goodreads asked V.W. Singer:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

V.W. Singer Wanting to write isn't enough, nor is simply knowing all the basics and techniques. You must have stories that you want to tell, stories or subjects that you feel strongly about and "know" deep inside you that what you have to say is different and interesting.

It is incredibly difficult and time consuming to write and write well. Expecting to be carried along by the muse and for words to just flow from your fingertips will not work for most. Writing is a craft, a skill, just like wood carving, painting, or martial arts. You have to put in the time and the sweat to be good.

Self doubt is corrosive and not helpful. Write first, and finish your work. There will be lots of people ready to tell you whether you have created anything worth reading.
