Well, you don't ask easy questions, do you? I think it varies from person to person, in part defined by expectations and life experiences. It is, as with many things, easier to define it by what it is not -- it is not conscription, required sacrifice, or an addictive need. In the best of circumstances, it is respect, passion, a solid partnership and honesty. It is joy, and it is steadfastness. It is a conversation that ends only with death -- and maybe not even then.

Elizabeth, this is not a question, but a chance to tell you how much I loved this book. The character of Meridian will stay with me for a long time, I think. Such a full life, so much learned, such sweetness and pain. And now that I read a little bit about your own life and that of your parents, it is all the more meaningful.
