Kate Dietz asked:

Will this be a good one for a middle school student? I have to read it for my summer homework, but having read many reviews, I'm not sure what it will be like?

Skye Tandy My 8th Graders had to read it as their summer assigned reading. Most of them enjoyed the book, though they were a little put off by the very frank commentary by the woman in regards to "growing up" female (I have boobs!; boycraziness). But, that is part of life, is it not? And that is a huge part of what makes this book so relevant and worth reading. There are two instances of "bull****" and a couple of times where variations of "pissed" are used. There was tremendous opportunity for conversation in regards to tragedy, "what ifs", the meaning of friendship, priorities, fear, etc. I could go on and on.
Raiann Yes, this would be a great selection for a middle school student.
Ninaka I am in middle school and I read it 2 years ago... YES!!! Its my favorite book of all times!
Jessika Caruso Yes, it would be great for a middle school student. It is not difficult to read and it will definitely keep your interest. I think you will be able to relate to the main characters since they were middle-school age for a lot of the book. I would highly recommend reading this book; it is riveting, highly educational, and moving.
Lila I am a middle school student, and I really enjoyed it. A couple parts may have been a little PG-13, but it's still one of my all-timefavorite books!
Nolan I think it would be good for anyone really. I really enjoyed it, but I'm not in middle school yet.
Micah Tracy Yes, I read it for a freshman high school English class, but I was in eighth grade. It was really really good. I couldn't put it down. t read like fiction, so that was good.
Kathryn I would recommend it. F comment has a good point to make, but it does reflect a suburban viewpoint. I must agree that it is very readable too
F. I could not get through it. Too much "white chick saves the world."

There's a weird stereotype, very much perpetuated here, wherein all white Americans are wealthy.

If you are not a wealthy white American you will feel left out. If you are, you are unlikely to learn anything from this.
