Michelle Harrison Good question. The role of a guardian is assigned as a penance for a fairy (or one of their family) being involved in the changeling trade. So it's a kind of slavery that's forced on them. I imagined each relationship as very different; with Turpin and Ratty I got the sense that Ratty was all she had, so she cared deeply for him and didn't make much mischief. She is also with him constantly. Whereas with Gredin there is that undercurrent of resentment, even when it's discovered that some of this is to keep Tanya at arm's length to protect her. I do imagine Gredin having a family - that his guardian role prevents him seeing much of - and a complicated past which adds to his treatment of Tanya.
