Knopf Books
Knopf Books asked Jo Baker:

Hi Jo, Your new book takes place during World War II. Why did you choose to set the book during this time period?

Jo Baker hello there!
the setting in this case is an absolutely inherent part of the story - if it weren't for the war, the story wouldn't have happened.
War is what forced my central character to make a series of extraordinary moral decisions. It also pushed him through a number of extreme experiences - like being on the run, and hiding from the Gestapo- which would never otherwise have been experienced. So the war is almost the predicament here, as well as the setting.
