Shannon Messenger Wow--so many questions. And I can't really give very detailed answers since I don't want to spoil things for readers. But I saw the power of pain like a drug, something so addictive that you crave it even though its going to hurt you. There's no logic with addiction. Just the need for the next high. (And no, I've never been addicted to drugs, but I've read quite a few memoirs from people who have been and based the concept loosely off those). Arella's gift was never specifically explained because she's such a secretive character that I didn't believe she would ever tell anyone the full details of how it works. But she's able to understand the wind in ways no one else can. And the roles the characters played in the third book were the roles I'd always planned.
