Loved Nobody's Fool (since I married into an upstate NY family and Sully was so familiar to me) and look forward to your sequel. Was there a particular moment when it occurred to you that there was a second novel to be written? Or was it something that came to you over time?

I had no intention of ever writing a sequel until I started actually doing it. It wasn't a matter of a single moment or realization. I think I was reluctant in the same way you worry about meeting an old friend you haven't seen in twenty or thirty years. What if you don't have anything in common any more? What if they're pissed at you for not staying in touch? But then there they are and you realize that you were wrong to worry, and you somehow pick up the conversation right where you left off so long ago.

Hi there! Thanks for taking questions...such a fan of your work. Straight Man and Empire Falls...didn't want them to end. So many characters you've created have "stuck with me". Is there any character that you have identified more closely with? Which character felt most personal to you? Thanks and looking forward to your newest!

I loved Empire Falls and Straight Man; you capture so much in the way of the humor and humanity of your characters' inner thoughts and the closeness (and intense, familiar realness) of the towns/communities they inhabit. What do you do, if anything, to prepare yourself for writing? Any habits? Do you outline or discovery-write your plots and characterizations? Do you do world-building beforehand or as you go along?
