I am 17. Will this book be too childish for me? What is the recommended age for this book?

The main character is mature for her age, and all the other characters are either hilarious, violent, responsible, relatable, or all of the above. You rarely encounter some of the signature "children's books" pit holes, such as cheesy dialogue or unquestionable "good" characters (in fact, almost everyone is morally grey). The characters are immensely well-written and the story is honestly one of the most well-plotted and intricate I've read. It's rare for a series with nine books to still have a coherent storyline, but in this case, there are plot points later one that were brilliantly foreshadowed in the first and second books). In that aspect, many elements of this series are honestly more suited as YA - there were so many darker scenes that made me surprised that SP was still considered a children's series, but it's really just flexible that way. Stephanie may be twelve in the first book, but by the ninth and last book in the original series, she's eighteen. I read the entire series as a teenager, and absolutely adored it. In the second series, the protagonist is 23 and the books really begin to deal with the consequences of being twelve years old when she had to fight monsters and save the world. Although it's still fun and full of action, the sequel series acknowledges the trauma and PTSD that came from what the protagonist experiences in the first series, when she's still a teenager. It's honestly more realistic and mature than many adult/teen books I've read, because you don't usually see those consequences dealt with in other novels.(less)
