I've read only Love in a Cold climate and it really did not bother me not to have the Pursuit's background. The story is really savoury and filled with humour, it is really interesting to have an off-the-beaten track look back on this era.

The first book’s great but not mandatory as both stories run in tandem. You get a good glimpse into the bonkers world of the Radlett family in both books and she explains the chadacters’ backstories pretty well. I like The Pursuit but it’s more of a traditional coming-of-age love story. The things it has going for it is that there’s more on the narrator’s childhood and it features her fantastic mother The Bolter who you only hear about in the second book. Saying that I much prefer Cold Climate - it’s the one I re-read.

Yes, it really helps as she doesn’t explain people and relationships thoroughly in this one.

No, not at all. The book stands on its own and is really good.
