Did anyone else found quite revealing that Captain Beatty would know so many different book quotes off the top of his head? It seams to me he was an avid reader. What are your thoughts on this?

This allures to the fact that Beatty was indeed well read, but his view of books is skewed by his duty as a fire chief. I believe Beatty, when faced with his imminent death, is conflicted with an inner dichotomy. Outwardly he distrust the words in the books he’s read, but his inner self is screaming with guilt over the life he’s chosen. In the end, he welcomes death as a release from his subconscious struggles and as justice for his secret thoughts.(less)
