Well, I think Knight explained this in the book but he's not a traditional kind of guy who likes anyone to tell him what he's supposed to do, how he's supposed to be. He's committed. He's loving. He'd never leave, he'd never cheat. But the trappings of society make him feel just that - trapped, and he's not a man to be trapped. So it isn't like he looks down on it - he just doesn't feel he needs a piece of paper to prove to Anya that she is his life. He'd rather do that his way. And he does.
