(view spoiler)[I am re-reading the whole Maiden Lane Series in prep for Duke of Sin and I appreciate the skill, subtlety and heart in the series even more on my third read of the stories. Just finished Duke of Midnight and was struck by the detailed descriptions of the homes and escape routes of Max and St. John. Do or did these buildings and their secret entrances and rooms exist in London or did you create them from imagination? (hide spoiler)]

Oh, thank goodness you asked this so I can show off the research that went into both these houses! Godric St. John's London home, Saint House is very loosely based on a real place: Somerset House. The oldest aristocratic families built their London residences on the Thames in medieval times so that they could have their own boat landings. Since St. John is from an ancient family, his house is very old and in a mix of styles with a garden that backs up on the river.
Maximus's underground exercise chamber is based on the fact that London itself is very old and, like ancient cities all over the world, has layers of history underneath it. One such layer is Roman. Every once in a while someone excavates a cellar in London and they find a hidden chamber that would have once been used to celebrate a mystery religion such as that centered on the god Mithras. The tunnel leading from the chamber to the back garden isn't based on a historical fact, but I can totes believe it, can't you?

Hi Elizabeth, I am a devotee of the Maiden Lane series and wanted to ask you a question about the Duke of Montgomery, but see you have already answered about him in extensive detail... So I'll just say I can't WAIT to read his book... (no pressure then!) and ask instead do you break off to write snippets from other books if they come to you, or do you manage to stick religiously to one book at a time?

(This might be a spoiler question) Who is Seraphine? Is it Bridget's real name or something? And yes, how do you get inspiration for your villains (and in Duke of Sin's case, your villain-ish hero)? I'm not talking about Hiddles, though. *I'm book-stalking again, hope you won't put a restraining order on me T.T*
