But basically, this book was a white woman's perspective on how a black mother would explain the Rodney King riots of her neighborhood. Smoky Night does not mention race, police, or any of the underlying causes of rioting, the just paints a picture of bad people doing bad things because it's a bad (and not-white) neighborhood. And all of these racial tensions can be solved if we just look to our pets for the answers!
