Did you set out to write a trilogy or did you start writing and find that it had developed into three parts?

The funny thing is, that when I first decided to write a series, I had planned for this to have five parts. After a lot of thinking when I went back to it I knew I couldn't stretch this out for five books. So I turned to the trilogy. Now I have a spin-off planned that could contain up to ten novels.
