the Goodreads Team asked Cornelia Funke:

What Shakespeare play do you recommend everyone should read once? Why?

Cornelia Funke oh that's a tough one Goodreads Team! I would say Shakespeare was such a breathtaking writer that he prepared dishes for many different readers, different moods, different stages of life....so it is important to choose the right one at the right time and according to one's current needs. I therefore feel very uncomfortable to suggest the ONE play for everyone. With 15 you want Romeo and Juliet, with 52 you may want to read about Lady Macbeth and a barren woman's twisted love for her husband. Shakespeare is all ages in one, he can easily shift shape and understand the full range of human existence. That makes him so unique- he can be cruel and compassionate, love and hate, father and son, even mother and daughter. As Rimbaud, another poem once said (I am sure I quote incorrectly): one day I decided to be a genius and to be everyone.
