IvanOpinion Because luck is always a big influence on outcome in baseball. Any team can win a few games against a better team, due to luck. That's enough to mean the best team might not win a short series. Over 150 games, luck should even out, so skill tipped the balance and ensured they got to the playoffs.
David Billy Beane answers that in the book -- his techniques are good for building a team for the long season. In a five or seven-game series, too much luck is involved. The best long-haul team often does not win the short series.
