I'm not sure this is a popular answer, but I'd have to say: treat writing like a profession, like a business. Writing is a craft and vocation – you need to work at it constantly – and you can be the greatest writer in the world, but unless you have a plan to get from the page to the bookshelf you're not doing yourself any favors!
