It can be read as a stand-alone. I think, though, that reading the series in order gives a fullness - a greater understanding of the characters - esp. Havers and Lynley - than you get from reading this as a stand-alone novel.

I started reading Elizabeth George's mysteries almost from the very beginning. I think you would lose so much if you jumped into it with this book. You won't get the emotional impact of how the actions of one of the main characters are affecting not only the story but the other characters.
