Hi! I just finished reading "Between Shades of Gray" and it was amazing! I really want to read "Salt to the Sea" because I heard that Joana, Lina's cousin, was one of the main characters in the story! I was also wondering what made you want to be an author? And I was also curious to know what are some of your favorite books, and if you have any book recommendations?

Hi Sara! Thank you for your kind words!
I wanted to be an author when I was very young. I wrote my first book in third grade. But after a while, I lost my courage to write and feared I didn't really have a talent for it. Prior to becoming an author I worked for twenty years in the music business. Through working in music I learned that failure is a prerequisite to success. Having the freedom to fail brought me back to writing.
And yes, I have many favorite books. Some are:
• A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly
• All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
• All the Truth That's in Me by Julie Berry
• How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff
Thank you for asking!

Hi Ruta! My name is María and I am from Spain. I read your books Between Shades of grey and Out of the easy last year , and I loved them. I think they are very inspirational. I have remembered the books since I finished reading them. Was the book Out of the easy based on true events? Thank you.

Hey Ruta! You visited my school (Tampa Prep) two years ago, and we spoke about how identity and family (or lack there of) play very important, but very different roles in both "Between Shades of Gray" and "Out of the Easy". I was wondering if the same themes are going to play as important of a role in your new book as they did in the first two. Also, how did the research processes differ between the three novels?
