Hi Ruta! I am a middle school student and I loved your book Salt to the Sea. I read it non stop and it was so powerful. I was wondering how long it took you to do the research? And would you consider coming to Canada? Thank you!

Hi Amelie!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I traveled to six different countries to track down information and testimonies while researching "Salt to the Sea." I usually spend 2-3 years researching the history for a novel and then another two years writing and revising. I spend a lot of time revising. I tell people that I'm more of a reviser than a writer :) and I would love to come to Canada! Thank you for asking!

Hey, I have (another) questions about Between Shades of Gray. I said another because you visited my school a week ago :) My question is about the epilogue. What does Lina mean by, "Where we were imprisoned for twelve years," after the last chapter? UPDATE:, I just reread the whole chapter and understood it! Anyways, I love your book and am planning to buy the new one as soon as it comes out!

A friend of mine recommended Salt to the Sea, and it has been my favorite read of the year thus far. My question is, how much time and what sort of research process goes into writing a book like Salt to the Sea? As a descendant of Eastern European Jews, who mostly perished during WWII, I find it difficult to find accurate information about that region and time period. Thank you for an exquisitely crafted novel!
