Nicole Lane The word Negro is highly offensive in the African American community and a book with such a title would receive a lot of criticism from the average American. I understand that it would warrant such a change.
PatchesEsq It was not retitled. "The Book of Negroes" is the original title in Canada. In the United States, where people are sensitive about the word "negro," it was given the alternate title.
Lisa The Book of Negroes refers to an actual historical document in the text. It was the documentation of the black loyalists that the British transported to Nova Scotia after the revolutionary war. No one is trying to be offensive with this, but rather call attention to an important time in history.
