There has been one well known attempt to steal the Crown Jewels. It was a LONG time ago - before they were stored in such a high level of security. A man visited many times and befriended the guard of the jewels. Then on one occasion, he knocked the guy on the head and he and his accomplices were leaving with the jewels stuffed inside their clothes. The attempt was only foiled when the son of the guard returned home unexpectedly (staff live in the Tower of London). The King at the time thought it was all so hilarious that he gave the thief an estate in Ireland!!! Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.
