I have read Between Shades of Gray and I'm currently reading Salt to the Sea. I love your books so much, but they are so sad! In Salt to the Sea, Emilia has to pretend to be a Latvian women named Una. Is this the same Una who died in Between Shades of Gray?

Thanks for your question. Wow, you have a good memory. The woman who died in "Between Shades of Gray" was Ona. She was the young woman with a baby. The woman in "Salt to the Sea" is Una. I never realized that the names were so close until you pointed it out. Thank you so much!! :)

As a middle school English teacher, Between Shades of Gray is one of my top recommendations for students who think they know WWII books. When I saw Salt to the Sea in the library, I snatched it immediately and am finding it hard to put down. I was surprised, though, to see another World War II book from you. Did the research for one lead to the idea for the other?
