(view spoiler)[Hi! My class read Between Shades of Grey and it was a really impactful story that I really liked! I was surprised that I would like a book like this but I knew I really liked it when I read it in 2 days. What was your favorite part to write in the book? And I had a question about the characters; Was Lina's Papa actually shot in the prison camp or did he live? I hope you can answer my questions! (hide spoiler)]

Hello Elise!
I'm so thrilled that you read "Between Shades of Gray" in your class. Please thank your teacher for me. So grateful she would assign it to you! :)
Answers to your questions:
- It would be too hard to narrow it down to just one favorite part in the book. But I loved the part where Lina discovers that Andrius has written messages to her amongst the pages of "Dombey & Son." That was a lot of fun to write.
- In terms of Lina's Papa, the answer to whether he lives or dies is actually answered in my new book, "Salt to the Sea!"
Thanks again so much!

Hi Ruta! I just recently finished Salt to the Sea and I have to say, it was really amazing. I loved how all the characters felt so real, and I could tell there was a lot of thought put into the story. Anyway, I would like to know what motivated you to become a writer? Also, do you have any favorite authors or books that you loved growing up?

Where do you find your inspiration for these historical fiction books? The true events for these stories are not well covered in our school curriculums, but my students love the books! Is there a certain time period that peaks your interest? Are there certain stories that you feel compelled to bring attention to that have been ignored?
